Mttc Study Guide For A Multi-Tasking Mom
In Part 1 of this series, I asked if you had ever read a list of study skills but just didn’t know how to go about making them happen. Like me, you’ve probably read a list of study tips and thought, ‘Yes, I’ve read all that before’. And you probably remember two weeks later being just as stressed about study and wondering what you could do to improve your study skills!! Well, I realised later that I had been reading that list of study skills and not really knowing how to put them into practise.
Always have everything that you need close by. There is nothing more distracting to your study session that standing up and having to go grab a pen or a class of water. So before you sit down, make sure you have all of your notes, stationary, a bit of nourishment and of course text books!
Wednesday’s session (my fifth attempt at writing for an uninterrupted 2 hours) turned into a journal writing session. I really wanted to focus on getting a grip on the direction I should take and so I wrote out my goals and some thoughts related to those goals. Less than halfway in, I decided I had my stuff figured out and I got distracted. I ended up on Facebook, dwelled on some things. It look me a few minutes (read: 20) to get back on track, and then I started writing this post on making the most of your writing session. I know firsthand!
Technical writers are high in demand and are needed in a number of areas. You must be able to be write clearly and concisely, and you must be able to be very articulate.
Next is the interviewing process. Explaining what the study is all about is the best way to begin the interview. If they agree about it, ask them what they have tried to do to solve the problem, their feelings about it and the things they might do differently. Do not force anyone into participating. Remember, they have the right to refuse when conducting the study.
For preschool, elementary, and middle school/junior high children, it is important that parents be responsible for creating this distraction-free, supply filled study area. This must NOT be in the child’s bedroom for hopefully obvious reasons. The dining room, the basement, the attic, or the den could work. The study area should not face a window and the student should not be able to view the TV or computer. I have other articles dealing with creating how to write my essay areas in the home that might be good to read if you have a younger child.
The Public Library. Libraries are the ultimate study environment. That IS what they are designed for. Most libraries have individual cubicles, couches, and tables to meet individual needs. Research can be done immediately. Libraries have computers and have areas for personal computers as well. There are generally small rooms for group work. Libraries have copy machines; and many now are equipped with vending machines for snacking needs.
Ideally we want our children to be perfect, while we ourselves are imperfect beings. No, I’m not suggesting that you have to be perfect in the hopes that your offspring will emulate you. The hardest part for you is to accept the fact that they are individuals. as they should be. The parent that attempts to make little carbon copies of themselves will ultimately fail.
Positive self talk is a skill taught from early on and should be the only self talk going on. If you were to secretly get into the heads of athletes, models and successful people, would you hear ” I am fat, lazy and stupid?” No, you would hear things like “I am strong! I can do this! I am successful and awesome!” This is the same type of self talk that you should train yourself and your teen to use. Make positive self talk your mantra throughout the day and help your teen do the same. Explain the importance of positive self talk. You have to have a winner’s mindset and it cannot be temporary.
Do whatever you like with your writing afterwards – carry it around with you, store it somewhere safe, or throw it out. Each action will make an impact on how you mentally ‘tag’ the piece of writing. Is it to be cherished? Is it important? Do you want it out of your life?
Finally, when looking at writing, we’re looking at habit, skill and desire well worth having. Truly, it’s something that will enhance our life in many areas.
